Rutin, also called sophorin, is a citrus flavonoid glycoside found in Sophora Japonica in China. Rutin is the glycoside between the flavonol quercetin and the disaccharide rutinose (α-L-Rhamnopyranosyl-(1→6))-β-D-glucopyranose). It is one of several bioflavonoids and widely used in the treatment of allergies, and studies have shown that it can slow down the release of histamine, the chemical released by mast cells that trigger common allergic reactions such as a stuffy nose. It is commonly included in anti-allergy formulas designed to relieve the symptoms of hay fever and asthma, and does not tend to cause side effects such as drowsiness typical of many antihistamine products.
